New Zealand now has the highest recorded per capita usage of methamphetamine (the drug “P”) in the world. There has never been another drug that has had such a rapid progression to addiction as crystal methamphetamine.

The harm that this very addictive drug is causing throughout all layers of our society is resulting in considerable damage to the health of individuals, impacting productivity in the workplace, increasing violent crime to adults and children and having a huge financial cost. It is estimated that the value of P sales exceeds one Billion dollars in a year.

We need to foster a change in New Zealand society’s attitude and behaviour towards the drug P – We must Rise Above P!

The Stellar Trust Inc. was established as a registered charity by the Rotary Club of Auckland East Inc. in November 2008 to raise significant amounts of money to substantially reduce the demand for P by:

• Providing education in schools on the harm of the drug
• Providing education for parents with children potentially exposed to the use of P
• Providing courses in workplaces for businesses with staff or customers with P problems
• Working with central and local governments to establish partnerships to tackle the demand for P
• Raising public awareness of the problem to encourage all levels of society to Rise Above P

The trust has been fortunate in establishing an Advisory Board of influential individuals who can advise and assist the trustees. The trust’s Patron is Principal Family Court Judge Peter Boshier. Advisory Board members include representatives from the Police, media, business, law, accounting, the Anglican Church, a former Cabinet Minister, a retired educationalist and a retired judge.

Some significant funds have already been raised through profits from the 2009 Auckland Seafood Festival and donations from trusts and individuals. However to really make a difference, several million dollars need to be raised.
